The Certified CMS experience

The Certified CMS experience

As I write this post flying back home from D.C., where I earned the Certified Sommelier diploma from the Court of Master Sommeliers, I reflect on the personal growth that I went through to get here. Initially, my passion for wine and some theoretical knowledge from previous diplomas, including the CMS Introductory level, seemed to promise a smooth transition toward certification. However, the deeper I immersed myself, the clearer it became that the process was a rigorous assessment of not only my selling acumen but also my commitment to the hospitality sector—a realization that only intensified my interest on this certification.

With a background in technology sales, I was accustomed to the frameworks and required steps to follow to position a product or service in the market. Yet, the CMS experience reminded me of the vital need for a solid knowledge base to engage with authenticity and articulate a genuine passion for hospitality in front of customers.

The exam required more than the mere identification of wines; it demanded the creation of a narrative that could elevate a customer’s dining experience, inform food pairings, and highlight the singular qualities of each wine, beer, spirit or cocktail under test. My preparations instilled a deep admiration for beverage service professionals, recognizing that true hospitality transcends routine execution—it embodies passion, kindness, and an unwavering pursuit of excellence. Engaging with individuals who personify these attributes was not only inspiring but also instilled a deeper appreciation for the essence of service. My journey through the CMS, including a prior unsuccessful attempt, introduced me to service professionals who were extraordinarily inspirational. Their seamless execution of service and adept discussions about an array of spirits and cocktails profoundly motivated me to overcome my own limitations.

Overall, the pursuit of the Court of Master Sommeliers Certified exam significantly altered my perception of the wine and hospitality industry. It transcended the mere attainment of credentials to encompass professional growth and a deeper understanding of the care invested in every attended dining experience. This journey has not only enhanced my knowledge as a sommelier but also cemented my role as a passionate advocate for the dedicated individuals in this dynamic field. And this is not even the Advanced or the Master Sommelier level. Kudos to the professionals out there that have achieved these incredible milestones.
